Stash and Grab
d
When the time comes for gift-wrapping and gathering all that you need, everything should be within easy reach. If you have a dedicated space for writing cards and wrapping gifts, keep your supplies nearby. For eco-friendly tabletop storage solutions, you can try anything from an old shoebox to a coffee can for smaller items.
So, where do you stash all that holiday decor? Take some close-up shots of the areas in your home that you decorate for the holidays. For instance, you can store the seasonal accents from your mantel all together in one box. Attach a picture of the display to the outside, which makes it easy to identify the contents and recreate the look next year in no time.
It also helps to have a place to hide gifts, especially if you shop early in the year for the upcoming season. Unless you store everything together, there is a good chance you will lose track of what you have. Smaller items can be kept in a gift drawer, while bulky pieces should be set aside in a spare closet or storage space. Make sure nothing is within easy reach for little ones or anyone else who might try to sneak a peek.
Don’t forget about all of the family photos taken during the holidays. Rather than leave them in limbo on your camera or computer, print out your favorites for framing and store other hopefuls in a box. This might even lead to an annual ritual where you start the season with a trip down memory lane looking at the photos from last year’s festivities.
In the end, it’s your holiday trappings that get the ball rolling for the memories of the moments that are yet to come. A little organization goes a long way toward helping you savor the sweetest celebrations of the season. Written by Jeanine Matlow.

Seasonal Storage Solutions
It’s no secret that we feel pressed for time during the holidays. That’s why it makes sense to organize everything you’ll need for gift giving, entertaining, and anything else that comes your way. Then you will be able to focus on your loved ones and the seasonal celebrations at hand. If you lock your process into place the first time around, you’ll only have to organize everything once. It’s true that your storage system may require some occasional tweaking from time to time, but that should be all.

Don’t feel the need to go out and buy a bunch of boxes just yet. Although contemporary containers exist for everything from gift-wrap to ribbons, you may already have something that works equally well. For instance, umbrella stands come in the perfect shape and size to hold endless rolls of wrapping paper. Wicker baskets work wonders for the little things that seem to vanish when you need them most, like scotch tape and seasonal address labels. Magazine racks can store your gift bags in an upright position, making them easy to grab and go. A small curtain rod can be hung at a lower height to accommodate rolls of ribbon, while an empty egg carton can corral votive candles.
It’s okay to invest in a few key pieces for your holiday storage, such as plastic bins, which are more durable than cardboard boxes and will protect your precious keepsakes from water damage. If you are a visual person, color-coded containers make things easy to find. If you prefer to use existing storage boxes, you can create colored labels for the same effect.
For the most part, ornaments are extremely fragile and should be properly stored to avoid breakage. Hold onto the original packaging if possible or consider a storage bin specifically designed for this purpose. Fine china and other serving pieces that are only used for the holidays should not take up kitchen cabinet space on a daily basis. Store them separately whenever possible, be it in a spacious cupboard or a spare room. You can also put them on everyday display if they do not feature a seasonal motif.
