Sentimental Journey
Something as simple as a photo collage provides a vibrant visual for the special moments shared with loved ones while on vacation. This project is budget-friendly and kid-friendly, too. The whole family can spend time together (just like you did during your trip) picking out photos and cutting them into classic shapes like circles and hearts.
Then, everyone can take turns gluing the images onto a large board. Or, arrange the photos on a table and cover the surface with glass for a medley that can be updated each time you return from a vacation. Photos can also be attached to a tray, which makes a great gift for anyone who tagged along.
Vacations present the perfect opportunity for collections of any kind. If air travel is your method of transportation, choose something compact that can easily slip into a carry-on bag.
For travel abroad, foreign currency can be transformed into a charming display. Showcase coins or bills inside a shadowbox frame. You can also place the currency in a decorative bowl for a centerpiece that is sure to be a conversation piece.
Postcards are always a staple on any trip. Unlike the dime store varieties of the past, today ’s versions are more diverse. Bring a slice of your stay to life by surrounding a picture postcard with a large mat and frame.
Airport shops may be a bit on the kitschy side, but they often carry an intriguing selection of travel trinkets. Add more impact to the standard snow globes and shot glasses by displaying them together on a shelf.
When you reach your destination, ask about authentic shops that are off the beaten path. These not-so-touristy attractions are more likely to have rare finds. Look for items that are indigenous to your surroundings to make your discoveries more distinct.
It’s always nice to ask the hotel staff before helping yourself to travel-size toiletries or anything else in your room. The bottles make a lovely presentation in a guest bath. A number of hotels make their moniker available for purchase on robes, towels, sheets, and more. Check out their gift shops for luxury items that will serve as a constant reminder of your pampered stay.
If you buy wine or food on your trip, keep the original bottles or boxes in your kitchen for a pretty presentation. For gourmet goodies that you can ’t get at home, place orders upon your return if possible. The same can be said for a quaint shop that catered to your every whim while you were away. Add your name to their mailing list and ask if they have a Web site so you can add to your collection even after you’re gone.
Sometimes the best things in life really are free. Whether it’s a menu or a matchbook cover, a simple reminder of a great restaurant you visited on your trip can take you back to that time. Fill a large jar with little tokens so you can see them every day. Natural elements, such as sand and seashells from your favorite beach, become even more beautiful when there is sentiment behind the selection.

Refrigerator magnets create a daily reminder of the places you’ve been. They may even inspire you to plan your next trip sooner rather than later. If you have a hodgepodge of mementos, such as ticket stubs from a Broadway play, wine corks from great restaurants, and other small items, gather them together in a glass container and label it with something like: My Summer Vacation.
Books, maps, coasters, and dish towels make special souvenirs. Select books about the region or those written by a local author. Either way, you are taking a slice of your stay back home with you. The books can be displayed beneath your favorite souvenirs or travel photos. Baskets and other works by local artists are also great finds that will stand the test of time.
Wherever you roam, bring something special home to savor. When you return to the quick pace of everyday life, one look at the pottery collection assembled from your travels will bring a warm smile to your face.
