Or, you can host a hobby night for family and friends. We may not all share the same interests, but most people like to express their creativity in some way. Guests can bring their own supplies for knitting, scrapbooking, and more.
Since summer is a great time for leisurely reading, it could also be the right time to start an outdoor book club (weather permitting). The best part is that it’s perfectly all right to opt for a little less serious literature at this time of year. You might also want to start a movie club with some friends. Rent a DVD on a rainy afternoon and discuss key points over dinner or drinks.
Summer is a great time to get together with family and friends. Just remember that even the best intentions may require a Plan B. If you’re hosting a backyard barbecue, keep in mind that the weather may not go your way. Rainy-day picnics can be just as easy to pull together in a pinch with some extra folding tables and chairs. Gather your guests inside before the clouds gather outside and toss some pillows on the floor for additional seating. Keep some casual centerpieces on hand, such as glass vessels filled with sand and seashells, or miniature beach balls atop colorful candlesticks.
Warm-weather décor allows you to be a little more daring. Whether you kick up the color or cover tables and chairs with beach towels, don’t be afraid to experiment with the unexpected.
Sometimes we’re so busy planning what we think we’re supposed to be doing that we get lost in the process. Simply create a list of summer activities and pick one whenever the mood strikes. Relax and remember that easy breezy living is the essence of summer.  Written by Jeanine Matlow

Since summer and fun seem to go hand in hand, it’s the perfect season for indoor and outdoor games for the entire family. In the backyard, croquet is a popular choice for the mildly active set. Basketball can be reserved for those who want to burn some of those barbecue calories. Back inside, you can still enjoy some physical activity, such as a friendly game of ping-pong. There’s also karaoke and good old-fashioned standbys like Scrabble and Monopoly.
Host an afternoon tea with a modern twist and serve freshly brewed iced tea with tuna or turkey sandwiches on croissants. A beautiful bowl of lemons can be used in lieu of a traditional centerpiece. Another idea that’s bound to appeal to the masses is an ice cream social. Ask everyone to bring a pint of their favorite flavor and you can supply the cups and cones. It doesn’t get any simpler or more satisfying than some cool relief on a hot summer night.
There’s nothing quite like a casual Sunday brunch, especially on a beautiful, balmy day. Serve cool foods to beat the heat, such as bagels and cream cheese with some refreshing fruit salad on the side.
Host a weekly neighborhood gathering on Sunday nights to include those returning from their weekend getaways. Keep it low-key and casual to take the pressure off everyone, even you. Serve simple snacks and ask your guests to bring a little something to share.
With so much seasonal fare available during the summer months, pick a favorite food category such as Mexican, Indian, or Asian and have a progressive neighborhood dinner where everyone gets to prepare one course throughout the evening. Going from one home to another gives you a nice mix of recipes and surroundings. Take the theme a step further with your attire and décor.
Your summer activities don’t have to be costly. In fact, they don’t have to cost a thing. Check out the latest books and DVDs from your local library to have on hand for a day filled with nothing but relaxation. Even if your family doesn’t play together, it’s nice to spend time together and enjoy some quiet time.
Though summer may be synonymous with travel, taking a trip isn’t as easy as it used to be. Luckily, you don’t have to get out of town to have a good time. With a few simple tricks up your sleeve, you might just manage to soak up some fun and some sun without ever leaving the comfort of home.
